## The six deviation categories in Division 22 Plumbing

### Manufacturer or Product Substitution (default grade: Blocker)

The submittal proposes a different manufacturer or product than the spec names, without an approved or-equal or substitution request.

Plumbing specs name specific pipe, fixture, and equipment manufacturers. Look for:
- Pipe manufacturer substitutions (Charlotte Pipe, JM Eagle, Viega, Watts, Nibco)
- Fixture manufacturer substitutions (American Standard, Kohler, Sloan, Zurn, Chicago Faucets, Elkay, Moen, Delta Commercial, T&S Brass)
- Water heater manufacturer substitutions (A.O. Smith, Bradford White, Rheem, Lochinvar, PVI)
- Valve manufacturer substitutions (Watts, Nibco, Apollo, Milwaukee Valve)
- Water cooler/fountain manufacturer substitutions (Elkay, Halsey Taylor, Oasis, Haws)
- Backflow preventer manufacturer substitutions (Watts, Zurn Wilkins, Apollo, Febco)
- Grease interceptor manufacturer substitutions (Zurn, Jay R. Smith, Watts, Schier)
- Pump manufacturer substitutions (Grundfos, Bell & Gossett/Xylem, Armstrong, Taco)

### Performance Specification Gap (default grade: Blocker)

A measurable performance property in the submittal (rating, capacity, tolerance, efficiency) does not meet what the spec requires.

Key performance parameters in plumbing submittals:
- **Pipe pressure rating** (SDR rating, schedule number, psi working pressure)
- **Pipe material specification** (Type L vs Type M copper, Schedule 40 vs 80 steel/PVC, CPVC, PEX class)
- **Flow rate (GPM)** at design conditions for water heaters and fixtures
- **Temperature rise** (degrees F at rated flow for water heaters)
- **Thermal efficiency** (%) for water heaters (condensing vs non-condensing)
- **First-hour rating** and recovery rate (GPH) for storage water heaters
- **Input capacity** (BTU/hr for gas, kW for electric water heaters)
- **Storage capacity** (gallons)
- **Fixture water consumption** (GPF for water closets and urinals per EPA WaterSense, GPM for lavatory faucets and showerheads)
- **Backflow preventer rating** (ASSE 1012, 1013, 1015, 1024 per hazard classification)
- **Grease interceptor capacity** (GPM flow rate, grease retention in lbs)
- **Roof drain flow capacity** (GPM at design head)
- **Expansion tank volume** (gallons, acceptance volume at operating pressure)
- **Insulation thickness** for hot water piping (per ASHRAE 90.1 Table 6.8.3)
- **Pipe velocity limits** (fps for copper, steel, plastic per manufacturer/code)

### Missing Certification or Compliance Documentation (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

A required listing, test report, certification, or compliance document is absent from the submittal package.

Required certifications in plumbing submittals:
- **NSF/ANSI 61** certification (drinking water system components - required for all products contacting potable water)
- **NSF/ANSI 372** compliance (lead-free per Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, 2014)
- **ASSE standards** for backflow preventers and safety devices (1012, 1013, 1015, 1017, 1024, 1047, 1048, 1070)
- **ASME certification** for water heaters and storage tanks
- **UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code)** or **IPC (International Plumbing Code)** compliance
- **UL listing** for electric water heaters (UL 174 / UL 1453)
- **CSA certification** for gas water heaters (ANSI Z21.10)
- **EPA WaterSense** certification for water-efficient fixtures
- **IAPMO listing** (cUPC mark) for plumbing products
- **ADA compliance** documentation for accessible fixtures (ANSI A117.1)
- **LEED water efficiency** documentation (fixture flow rates, WaterSense compliance)
- **Seismic certification** for water heaters and equipment anchorage (IBC/ASCE 7)
- **Buy America** compliance (for federally funded projects, ARRA)
- **Scald protection certification** (ASSE 1016, 1017, 1070 for mixing valves and thermostatic valves)

### Aesthetic Deviation (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

A visible attribute (color, finish, texture, profile) differs from the spec or the architect-approved sample.

- Fixture color (white, bone, biscuit, black per manufacturer line)
- Faucet finish (polished chrome, brushed nickel, satin stainless, matte black)
- Fixture style and model appearance (ADA-compliant vs standard, wall-hung vs floor-mount)
- Water cooler/fountain finish and configuration (wall-mount, bi-level, bottle filler)
- Exposed piping finish (chrome-plated, stainless steel) in accessible areas
- Access panel finish and type

### Detail or Installation Mismatch (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

The submitted detail, dimension, anchorage, or installation method differs from what the spec or drawings require.

- **Pipe material** mismatch (Type L vs Type M copper, cast iron vs PVC for DWV, CPVC vs PEX for domestic water)
- **Joining method** differs (solder vs press-fit/ProPress vs brazed for copper; hub vs no-hub for cast iron; solvent weld vs mechanical for PVC)
- **Pipe size** differs from design drawings
- **Water heater vent type** (direct vent vs power vent vs atmospheric draft)
- **Trap size** differs from code minimum
- **Fixture rough-in dimensions** differ (affects coordination with walls and structure)
- **Valve type** differs (gate vs ball vs butterfly, full port vs standard)
- **Expansion tank** size or pre-charge pressure differs
- **Insulation type or thickness** for hot water piping differs
- **Floor drain body type** (adjustable vs fixed, sediment bucket vs open)
- **Water hammer arrestor** location or sizing differs
- **Mixing valve type** (thermostatic vs pressure-balancing vs combination)
