## The six deviation categories in Division 06 Wood, Plastics, and Composites

### Manufacturer or Product Substitution (default grade: Blocker)

The submittal proposes a different manufacturer or product than the spec names, without an approved or-equal or substitution request.

Wood and composite specs name basis-of-design manufacturers and product lines. Submittals proposing alternates must provide "or equal" documentation. Look for:
- Structural composite lumber substitutions (Weyerhaeuser Microllam LVL, Parallam PSL vs Boise Cascade or LP alternatives)
- I-joist manufacturer/model changes (Weyerhaeuser TJI vs Boise Cascade BCI)
- Simpson Strong-Tie connector substitutions with USP Structural Connectors or other brands
- Truss manufacturer changes (MiTek vs Alpine vs other fabricators)
- Glulam manufacturer substitutions (Western Wood Structures, Nordic Structures, Calvert Company)
- CLT/mass timber panel manufacturer changes (Nordic Structures, SmartLam, Structurlam)
- Architectural woodwork fabricator changes - verify AWI membership and quality grade capability

### Performance Specification Gap (default grade: Blocker)

A measurable performance property in the submittal (rating, capacity, tolerance, efficiency) does not meet what the spec requires.

Key performance parameters in Division 06 submittals:
- **Wood species and grade** - Douglas Fir #1, SPF #2, Southern Pine #2, etc. per AWC NDS grade tables
- **Moisture content** - 19% max for S-DRY lumber, 15% max for KD (kiln-dried), MC requirements for enclosed conditions
- **Glulam combination symbol** - 24F-V4, 26F-V2, etc. per AITC/APA standards; species and appearance grade
- **Structural composite lumber grade** - LVL, PSL, or LSL design values (Fb, Fv, E, Fc) per manufacturer ESR
- **Fire-retardant treatment (FRT)** - type, flame spread index, smoke developed index per ASTM E84
- **Preservative treatment retention** - pcf (pounds per cubic foot) per AWPA standards for intended use category
- **Connector/hardware load ratings** - allowable loads per ICC-ES ESR at specified conditions (wood species, load duration)
- **Truss design loads** - per TPI 1 including dead, live, snow, wind, and duration-of-load factors
- **Deflection limits** - L/360 live load, L/240 total load, or tighter limits per spec
- **CLT panel layup and grade** - per ANSI/APA PRG 320, stress grade and number of laminations
- **Plywood/sheathing span rating** - APA span rating and exposure classification (Exposure 1, Exterior)

### Missing Certification or Compliance Documentation (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

A required listing, test report, certification, or compliance document is absent from the submittal package.

Required certifications in Division 06 submittals:
- **AWC NDS (National Design Specification)** - structural design values for sawn lumber and connections
- **APA (The Engineered Wood Association)** trademarked grade stamps for plywood, OSB, glulam, and I-joists
- **AITC (American Institute of Timber Construction)** certification for glulam fabricators
- **ICC-ES ESR (Evaluation Service Report)** - required for all proprietary engineered wood products, connectors, and hardware
- **AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute)** quality grade certification (Economy, Custom, or Premium)
- **AWPA (American Wood Protection Association)** treatment quality mark for preservative-treated wood
- **IBC Chapter 23** compliance documentation for wood construction
- **ANSI/APA PRG 320** compliance for CLT panels
- **ASTM E84** or **UL 723** test reports for FRT products - flame spread and smoke developed
- **FRT manufacturer's listing** for intended application (interior, exterior, exposed, enclosed)
- **TPI 1 (Truss Plate Institute)** sealed design drawings for metal-plate-connected trusses
- **Seismic design documentation** per IBC/ASCE 7 for lateral force-resisting wood systems

### Aesthetic Deviation (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

A visible attribute (color, finish, texture, profile) differs from the spec or the architect-approved sample.

Applies primarily to architectural woodwork and exposed structural wood:
- AWI quality grade mismatch (Custom specified, Economy submitted)
- Wood species or veneer species differs from spec (white oak vs red oak, rift-sawn vs plain-sawn)
- Stain color or finish type mismatch (lacquer vs conversion varnish vs polyurethane)
- Veneer matching method differs (book match vs slip match vs random match)
- Exposed glulam appearance grade (Industrial, Architectural, Premium) below spec
- Exposed fastener heads where concealed fastening was specified
- Panel core type affecting visible edge quality (MDF vs particleboard vs veneer core)
- Plastic laminate pattern, color, or texture does not match spec selections

### Detail or Installation Mismatch (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

The submitted detail, dimension, anchorage, or installation method differs from what the spec or drawings require.

- **Lumber dimensions** - nominal vs actual, or non-standard sizes submitted
- **Connection hardware** - nail/screw size, count, or pattern differs from structural drawings
- **Joist/rafter spacing** - 24" o.c. submitted where spec calls for 16" o.c.
- **Bearing length** - inadequate bearing at supports per NDS requirements
- **Sheathing nailing schedule** - nail size and spacing at panel edges and field differs from shear wall schedule
- **Blocking and bridging** - missing or spacing differs from spec
- **Truss bracing** - temporary and permanent bracing details do not match BCSI guidelines
- **Preservative treatment** - ground contact (UC4A) submitted where above-ground (UC3B) was specified, or vice versa
- **Adhesive type** - interior adhesive where exterior/waterproof is required
- **FRP panel thickness or profile** differs from spec
- **Wood-to-concrete anchorage** - anchor bolt size, spacing, or embed depth differs

### Submittal Package Incompleteness (default grade: Fix and Resubmit)

A required submittal element (cut sheet, schedule, calculation, sample) is missing, leaving the package unreviewable as submitted.
